Window functions after installing shutters are a common concern for homeowners. Many people are under the impression that you cannot open windows. But it really depends on the kind of windows you have and the way your shutters are mounted.

Can You Open Windows With Shutters?

If your windows open left to right or up and down, shutters will not prevent your windows from opening. Windows that crank out or tilt inward for cleaning are a little different though. There are still ways to open them but, your general contractor will have to choose the correct mount. Otherwise, the shutters can block these window features.

Can You Leave Your Shutters Open?

You can open your shutters however far you wish and keep them open as long as you want to. Although, many wish to keep them closed or partially open to help cool down the home and provide shade.

But if it’s a cooler season, or you want to swing open your shutters all the way to enjoy more sunlight, a beautiful view, or it’s cleaning day, you’re good to go.

That’s one of the great things about them, you have control over how much or how little sunlight you want to let in. You aren’t stuck with one permanent option.

Should Exterior Shutters Go On All Windows?

Usually, if you add exterior shutters to one window in a room, it’s good to add them to all the windows. Otherwise, the windows without them can stand out and look wonky. You also want to be aware of which windows will work best.

Some window types such as double mulled windows, bay windows, and windows that are wider than taller, usually won’t work well with shutters. But you can talk always talk with a general contractor from West Shore Construction and discuss potential solutions to get your shutters installed.

Do Shutters And Doors Have To Match?

Your shutters don’t need to exactly match your door and trim, but you still want to coordinate. Some people will choose different shades of the same color, so they collaborate but won’t clash.

You can get really creative with choosing a color. We offer a plethora of options to choose from to perfectly match the already existing color palette of your home.

Our team can help you choose beautiful, coordinating colors that will add an aesthetic boost your house has been dying for. Like the icing on a cake, or adding a fine piece of jewelry to an already stunning outfit.

Do Shutters Add Value To A Home?

Decorative shutters and hurricane shutters are very appealing to prospective buyers. They boost your curb appeal, offer insurance discounts, and promote energy efficiency. Plus, if they’re hurricane shutters, you may be eligible for insurance discounts.

Energy efficiency is probably the most significant contributor that adds value to your home. Potential buyers may be willing to pay more if they expect utility costs to be less.

A Guide To Shutter Maintenance

Aluminum shutters, unlike wood, require very minimal maintenance. The powder coat saves you from having to repaint them because of wear from the elements. Furthermore, a powder coat allows dirt deposits to simply wash away the next time it rains.

But in order to keep your shutters looking brand new and functioning in their prime, we recommend following the three simple maintenance tips below.

1. Regularly Clean Shutters

If you allow dirt and grime to build up, they will begin to look unsightly. To clean your shutters use a soft brush, mild detergent, and warm water to gently scrub away any dirt. You can even use an old toothbrush to ensure you’re reaching all of the cracks and crevasses. Once you’re finished, rinse away the soap with warm water.

2. Inspect Your Shutters For Any Damages

Look at the surface and edges for any corrosion or other issues. Shutters face many potential damages from the elements, especially over time. It’s important you catch any damages quickly, so the solution can be a repair instead of a costly replacement. Plus, if you have storm shutters you want to make sure they’re in the best condition necessary to get you through a storm safely.

3. Lubricate

Twice a year, we recommend lubricating any moving parts with a silicone lubricant. This keeps everything moving smoothly. Remember to stay away from oily lubricants and harsh brushes or chemicals when caring for your shutters.
